JNU, DU, Amity University and IITs Aiming for ‘Institute of Eminence’ Status

  • December 12, 2017, is the deadline for the institutes or universities to submit the applications for 'Institute of Eminence' status.
  • Experts in the field of education will evaluate the institutes and the final list is expected to be finalised in March 2018.
JNU, DU, Amity University and IITs Aiming for ‘Institute of Eminence’ Status

Top universities across the country like the University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University and many other state universities are aiming for ‘Institute of Eminence’ status. Various Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have also joined the list. The deadline to submit the applications for the institutes seeking ‘Institute of Eminence’ status is December 12, 2017.

A top official associated with HRD Ministry revealed that they had received 73 applications from different institutes until December 11, 2017. More institutes are expected to submit the applications by December 12, 2017, and the HRD Ministry is expecting close to 100 applications. HRD Ministry’s idea to set up 20 world class institutes received a wide response from the top universities and institutes of higher learning across the country. The institutes, that will be selected for ‘Institute of Eminence’ status will have complete academic and financial autonomy, he highlighted.

Following are some of the universities and institutes applied for ‘Institute of Eminence’ status: -

  • Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
  • Jadavpur University
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
  • Goa University
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
  • Mangalore University
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay
  • OP Jindal Global University
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
  • Ashoka University
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati
  • Manipal University
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee
  • Amity University

So far, six private institutes have also submitted applications for ‘Institute of Eminence’ tag. However, private institutes are not eligible for government funding if they get the world-class status.

HRD Ministry will soon begin the process of shortlisting the institutes. A panel of experts will evaluate the institutes and the names of institutes selected for the ‘Institute of Eminence’ tag are expected to be finalised in March 2018.
