JNU: Major Drop in Number of Applications, Competition Increases

Jawaharlal Nehru University has witnessed a major drop in the number of applications received for the second consecutive year. However, massive seat cut in various courses has increased the competition between the aspirants. As of now, a total number of 30 aspirants are competing for one seat. Last year, it was 28.

The varsity received 55,000 application forms as on April 5, 2017, the last day for the submission of application forms. The varsity had received the highest number of applications in 2015-16. Around 79,000 applications were received in 2015-16. However, the number of applications received for the year 2017 is comparatively less than the previous six years.

One of the higher officials of JNU revealed that massive seat cut in M.Phil and Ph.D. courses might be the reason for the less number of applications. However, the final analysis can be done only after getting region wise and programme wise data. It will give a clear picture of the reason for the decline in the number of applications.

The varsity has become a centre of protests from the past few months. Students and professors protested against the UGC gazette notification. Later, High Court of Delhi clarified that following UGC gazette notification is mandatory. Later, there was a massive cut in the number of seats in M.Phil and Ph.D. courses. Last year, the varsity offered around 2,700 seats. However, due to the new UGC notification, the seats were reduced to 1800 this year.

Interestingly, the varsity bagged the Visitor’s Award and performed well in NIRF Rankings 2017 by securing the second rank.
