The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has started conducting its mid-semester examinations for the current term digitally. The vice chancellor of JNU, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, took to Twitter and posted a tweet in appreciation of the step taken by the central university. According to the reports, the mid semester exams of JNU will be conducted in the online mode until May 4, 2020.
The Vice Chancellor said in his tweet that the School of Environmental Sciences of has JNU decided to take the mid semester exams online in order to complete the academic requirements for the degrees of M.Sc (Master of Science) , M.Phil (Master of Philosophy) , and Ph.D . The exams will be organised completely using digital means and will go on from April 20, 2020 to May 4, 2020. Like all the other institutions, JNU is also closed due to the nationwide lockdown imposed by the government in order to contain the spread of novel coronavirus. The academic sessions of the university are expected to remain shut until May 3, 2020 as that is till when the lockdown is imposed as of now.
With the universities being shut and all academic processes having come to a halt, it is becoming a matter of concern for all the institutions in the country to come up with alternatives. They are trying to take special measures so that students can complete their degree and their education does not suffer while also looking after their safety and health. Many universities and colleges have adopted e-learning and are continuing with their academics through the online mode so that students do not have to compromise either on their education or their health. Online classes are a great way to prevent the academic loss of students but it is not possible for every student to have access to the internet. JNU is one of the universities that is leaving no stone unturned so as to stay connected with its students as well as staff members. It had also held digital workshops a few days back for training the teachers in digital learning and teaching processes.

Additionally, the vice chancellor also submitted a report in which he suggested that the summer vacations should be cancelled and those students who would be unable to give their examinations due to the lack of internet connectivity should be permitted to submit their assignments with a grace period. The reports have also revealed that the Vice Chancellor has also pitched the idea that students pursuing M.Phil and Ph.D from JNU should be given relaxations in deadlines for submitting their thesis based on the UGC guidelines.

However, no clarity has been provided on the matter of extensions yet. As of now, JNU is all set to begin its mid term exams online. After the Government of India extended the lockdown for the third time, JNU released a notification stating it will remain closed till May 17, 2020.
