The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) warned its students of strict disciplinary action on 17 April 2020, Friday. The students were alerted that if they violated the lockdown guidelines that are imposed on the campus, strict action will be taken against them. This warning was given through a notice which was issued by the Chief Proctor of JNU, Professor Dhananjay Singh. He stated that some students residing on the university campus were found violating the guidelines.
The notice said that despite the essential service providers of Jawaharlal Nehru University working tirelessly in order to meet the requirements of the community of the varsity and ensuring their security and safety, it has been discovered that some students are openly defying the guidelines of COVID-19. These students are persistently misbehaving and flouting the instructions even after being given multiple reminders, thereby putting not only themselves but the entire community at a serious risk health risk.

The notice further stated that it had been brought to the notice of the administration of JNU that some students had been disregarding the requests of shopkeepers and the guards on duty to keep social distancing, maintain a queue, and wear masks.
According to the notice issued, these students have also been caught cycling and walking on the road without any purpose. It was made extremely clear that such students are to rigorously follow the COVID-19 guidelines in letter and spirit. The notice declared that if anyone was caught violating the coronavirus pandemic guidelines set by the university, it will result in inviting disciplinary action that will be taken against them.

JNU has released a notification stating that it will be closed till May 17, 2020 because of the extension of the nationwide lockdown. Students have been asked to stay where they are and not return to the campus until they get any further notice by the university. All colleges and universities in India are taking special measures to ensure the safety of their students.
