Rakesh Bhatnagar, Professor of Biotechnology, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is the new vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. As per the officials of the BHU, the government had shortlisted three candidates for the post which included Ramakrishna Ramaswamy, a scientist from JNU, and Devendra Kumar Gupta, a surgeon from the All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences - AIIMS.

However, a senior official approved for Bhatnagar’s name and the orders have been issued for the same so that he can take the charge at BHU . The official at the BHU informed that all the formalities for the same have already begun and he will take charge as soon as all the paperwork is done.
Banaras Hindu University is one of the 43 central universities across the country. There was an urgent need for a Vice Chancellor as the former V-C Chandra Tripathi was on leave for almost two months before his tenure was to end the following year. It created a lot of ruckus on the BHU campus last year and hindered its smooth functioning. However, Neeraj Tripathi, Registrar BHU was appointed an additional charge V-C since then.
