JNU to Introduce Certificate Course in ‘Yoga Philosophy’ from Next Academic Session

JNU to Introduce Certificate Course in ‘Yoga Philosophy’ from Next Academic Session

One of the top ranked universities in India, Jawaharlal Nehru University or JNU will launch a certificate course in ‘Yoga Philosophy’ from the next academic session. Academic Council (AC) of the varsity approved the course on June 17, 2017. JNU is also organising yoga workshops to mark the International Yoga Day on June 21, 2017. The yoga workshops at JNU began on June 17, 2017.

Yoga Philosophy is a one-year certificate course that consists of two semesters. The course majorly focuses on various topics that include ‘Yoga tradition Pre-Patanjali & Post Patanjali’, ‘Yoga for well-being’ and ‘Yoga in Bhagavad Gita’. Interestingly, there is no minimum qualification required for the admission to Yoga in Philosophy course, and it is open to students of all age groups. Special Centre for Sanskrit Studies of the varsity will offer the course.

Rector of JNU revealed that the centre would teach eight modules under Yoga in Philosophy course. As a part of the ‘Yoga in Bhagavad Gita’, students will learn about Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Gyan Yoga. Under ‘Yoga & Ayurveda’ module, students will learn about holistic health care.

Yoga for well being is another module through which students can learn about the importance of yoga for the well-being of the individual, social and cosmic, he added.

The varsity has been planning to launch a course in Yoga for the past few years, and the matter was a part of the discussion during various Academic Council meetings. Further, the varsity is also planning to launch M.Sc in Mathematics. The proposal is under review, and the final decision will be taken at the next AC meeting.

The Academic Council of JNU also gave an approval for ‘Special Centre for Disaster Research’.
