Kalyani University Admits  Transgender Student Under the Supernumerary Quota

Sumana , a 21-year-old transgender secured admission in Kalyani University under supernumerary quota on humanitarian grounds. She was admitted for a postgraduate degree in the University. The initiative taken by University reveals equality in education.

Sumana is an orphan and spent her childhood in an orphanage. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree from Srikrishna College, Nadia district. She also met the Education Minister of the state, Partha Chattopadhyay who helped her with the issue of admission.

The Secretary of University’s Faculty Council, Dr. Pinaki Chattopadhyay said that the admission is granted to Sumana on humanitarian grounds. The University has also considered the verdict which was given by the Supreme Court on transgenders. The VC of the University responded positively and approved the admission beyond the intake capacity. He mentioned that no other university or institution in West Bengal might have taken this step.
