Karnataka Govt. Seeks 50% MBBS and BDS Seats in Deemed Universities

The state government of Karnataka convened a meeting with the representatives of deemed medical universities across the state on June 20, 2018. During the meeting, the state government asked the deemed universities to share at least 50% of MBBS and BDS seats with the state government so that native/ local students will get a chance to get admission in deemed universities.

Eight deemed universities, which offer 1,630 MBBS and 630 BDS seats responded by highlighting that the matter must be taken up with the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) which is the authority responsible for seat allocations.

Medical Education Minister of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar revealed that ever since eight medical institutes were declared as deemed universities, there was no agreement between the state government and university on 50% share of seats for Karnataka students . On the other hand, these universities never surrendered the vacant seats to the state government. Therefore, the government wants deemed universities to share 50% seats so that more students in the state get an opportunity to pursue medical education, he explained.

DK Shivakumar further stated that most of the deemed universities in the state are in favour of sharing 50% MBBS and BDS seats. Since DGHS is the nodal authority for seat allocations, the state government will officially request the authority to allow the seat-sharing process. Out of eight deemed universities, two of them have opposed the move and the state government is trying to convince them, he added.

The state government is uncertain whether the proposal will come into effect from the academic session 2018-19 or not. However, the government will try to implement the proposal for the academic session next year.
