The
Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj (RCSM) Government Medical College (Kolhapur)
here has regained
50 seats for its MBBS course after three years.
With this, the college will have 150 MBBS seats for the 2016-17 academic year.
The Medical Council of India (MCI) has told the Union health ministry to approve 50 seats for RCSM College as the institution complied with norms. The seats were cancelled in 2013-14 after MCI found lack of proper infrastructure to cater 150 students. The Union health secretary informed the college about the decision recently.
"Approval of 50 seats is the result of consistent efforts by the officers and staff of the government medical college. The decision will help society as the college will produce 50 more doctors every year,"
-Dr.Jayprakash Ramanand, Dean College.
The college started in 2001 with 100 seats for MBBS students. The seats were gradually increased to 150 gradually, however in 2013, the MCI committee found that the college does not have adequate teaching staff to cater to as many students. The committee remarked that facilities for students are not up to the mark and recommended revocation of 50 seats.
