In a press statement released by the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (Assam) , the institute was proud to announce that IIT-G has brought laurels to the north-east region by bagging good positions in the NIRF Rankings 2017 released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
IIT Guwahati has been ranked at the eight position in the category of 'Best Universities & Institutes'. Moreover, the institute also bagged the seventh spot in the 'Top Engineering Institutions' category of the NIRF Rankings 2017.

The director of the premier engineering institute, Professor Gautam Biswas, in the statement, praised the students, research fellows, faculty members and staff members for their continuous and striving efforts towards the upliftment of the institute as a whole. He further added that as a team, the institute shall move forward to achieve further heights and long-term targets and improve the quality of education offered at the institute.

Performance of Assam in NIRF India Rankings 2017:
- Other institutes/universities from the Assam region that received recognition in the 'Top 50 Overall Ranking' category of the NIRF India Rankings 2017 were Gauhati University and Tezpur University at the 43rd and 48th ranks respectively.
- Moreover, in the 'University Level ranking', Gauhati University, Tezpur University, Dibrugarh University and Assam University secured the 27th, 30th, 74th and 92nd ranks respectively.
- Jagannath Barooah College , also known as JB College, located in Jorhat secured the 64th rank in the 'College Level Ranking' for the year 2017. It is also the only institute from the state of Assam to have featured in this list.
