LPU School of Agriculture Bags Research Award Worth Rs. 4.5 Crore

The School of Agriculture of Lovely Professional University has been consistently working on organic farming and its implementation. So far, the varsity has been successful in carrying out organic farming on the campus. The School of Agriculture of LPU takes into account a scientific approach to pedagogy and curricula of the course is at par with global standards. The main objective of the varsity is to promote quality research in the field of agriculture.

The varsity has taken several initiatives to carry out agricultural activities on the campus. Research oriented activities taken up by the university are noteworthy. Crop production has been encouraged in the vast lands of the varsity and students are playing a significant role in nursery raising for horticulture crops, sampling or analysis of soil and water, crop and seed identification and others. There are separate labs for carrying out these activities and the varsity is not leaving any efforts unturned that ultimately lead to the development of leaders in the agriculture field.

However, the university has been laying more emphasis on organic farming, as it does not deplete the soil. Today, most of the farmers are using harmful pesticides and insecticides in their fields and causing damage to the soil. The fertility of the soil will deplete after few years due to overuse of fertilizers and insecticides and there is a need to protect the soil and environment.

Therefore, LPU has taken the initiative and is practicing organic farming on the campus. Hundreds of students are involved in this noble initiative. Through this, the students are being taught about sustainable farming practices, the nutrient value of crops as well as greenhouse (poly house) protection, collection of plasma, tissue culture, floriculture and usage of natural resources and compost.

Vice-Chancellor of Lovely Professional University, Dr. Ramesh Kanwar revealed that their main aim is to see School of Agriculture as the Centre for Research and Excellence and to place it among the top schools of the world. Dr. Ramesh Kanwar is also a Water Resources Engineer and works as the consultant for Global Environment Facility at the European Commission and World Bank. Through his ideas and thoughts, the students of School and Agriculture have been learning about the benefits of novel agriculture.

As a part of Indo-Canadian Project, Lovely Professional University, and McGill University, Canada has been granted Rs. 4.5 crore. The project will be a benefit to the global society.
