Madhya Pradesh to Offer Only 60,000 Engineering Seats

Madhya Pradesh government has ordered that only 60,000 engineering seats will be offered for admission this year following the Department of Technical Education decision to reduce the seats in engineering courses by 10,000. The admission process is likely to begin in the mid of June.

As per the records, around 16 private engineering colleges have been closed in Madhya Pradesh as seats in these colleges remained vacant for a long time. In 2017, 70,000 seats were available for admissions while only 45,000 seats were filled. The Madhya Pradesh Technical Education Department has already announced that no new engineering college will be opened this year.

The Technical Education Department stated that in the past few years many engineering colleges have been established adding to a large number of seats going vacant. It is of the opinion that the main focus should be on quality and not the quantity. Additionally, there are around 200 private colleges in M.P. that can survive only if they offer quality education to students.

Another reason adding to the woes is that the concentration of engineering colleges is more in cities like Indore and Bhopal. There are around 90 engineering colleges in Bhopal following which the education department is not allowing the establishment of any new college.

Apart from this, Aadhaar has been made mandatory for admission in engineering courses across Madhya Pradesh from this academic year. The department tried to implement the same last year also as there were many complaints of students taking multiple admissions during the counselling process.
