It seems like B.Ed course is still one of the popular courses in Maharashtra. The State Directorate of Higher Education (DHE) has witnessed the hike in the number of applicants by 70 percent this year. So far, DHE has received 40,400 applications for B.Ed course out of which 39,133 students have confirmed their applications. Keeping in view the tremendous response for B.Ed course, Directorate of Higher Education has approved a five-day extension of the application process.
In the year 2016, only 23,838 students applied for B.Ed course. Last year, there was confusion over the admission process. In the same way, most of the graduates did not choose B.Ed as the career option due to fewer job opportunities.

In the year 2016, private and unaided B.Ed colleges clarified to the state government that they would not participate in the state counselling process for the admission to B.Ed courses. However, the state government did not consider the proposal made by private and unaided B.Ed colleges. Due to the tussle between the state government and private B.Ed colleges, there was confusion among the students regarding the admission process.
Finally, the state government carried out CAP for the admission to B.Ed courses and the candidates who did not apply for Common Entrance Test assuming no CAP missed the opportunity of getting admission.

This year, the government has made B.Ed degree mandatory for teaching posts. Most of the private schools are planning to pick up teachers for English medium from various B.Ed colleges. In simple terms, B.Ed students will also have campus placements in Maharashtra hereafter. However, there is no demand for teachers in Marathi medium schools.
One of the officials of DHE also indicated that B.Ed course should receive more applications in the coming years. If it does not happen, it becomes difficult for the private B.Ed colleges to survive.
