Maharashtra: Private Law Colleges to Hike Fees after Nine Years

Self-financing/ private law colleges in Maharashtra have been accorded permission to hike course fees. Since nine years, all the colleges have been following the same fee structure. Therefore, most of the private law college managements felt that it is time to hike the course fee. Fee Regulating Authority or FRA is revising the course fees for both three-year LLB course and five-year LLB course. Few colleges have even decided to double or triple the course fee while some colleges have even reduced the existing fee.

So far, the fee structure for private law colleges was regulated by the respective affiliated universities. Many universities across the state like the University of Mumbai had not revised the fee structure since 2008. In the year 2008, Mumbai University had prescribed around Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 13,500 for both three-year and five-year LLB course. Later, the state government categorised the law programmes as professional courses. Therefore, all the law colleges came under the ambit of Fee Regulating Authority (FRA). Now, all these law colleges are eligible for revision of the existing fee structure.

The reason for bringing all the colleges under the ambit of FRA is to monitor the finances of the individual colleges. This kind of mechanism was prevalent in many universities across the state. Most of the law colleges across Maharashtra have decided to fix the annual fees for law courses around Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 20,000. However, there are few colleges that want to charge more due to better infrastructure facilities and quality faculty.

FRA’s approval has been a great sigh of relief to many law colleges as some of these colleges have been facing financial crisis for the past few years.
