Manipal University to Open Content, Language Integrated Learning Centre

Manipal University’s CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is all set to be inaugurated on November 6, 2017. It is a Research and Training Centre which has been led by Manipal University. Chairperson of PLSI (People’s Linguistic Survey of India), Mr. Ganesh N Devy will deliver the inaugural address.

Gisella Lange (Foreign Language Inspector – Ministry of Education, Italy) will deliver the keynote address on latest visions for CLIL in Italy and Europe. Diplomat In-Charge of Education (Embassy of Spain) affairs will also attend the inaugural session.

Apart from Manipal University, similar centres will open this week in Pondicherry, Chandigarh and Pune. The objective of these centres is to promote innovative teaching practices, innovative learning practices, mother-tongue-based education and multilingual pedagogy. These centres will also tie up or liaise with local B.Ed colleges and schools to help teachers and students learn better.

Neeta Inamdar (Principal Coordinator of CLIL India Project) explained that the centres would play a crucial role in improving and building students’ proficiency in two languages with vital emphasis on the mother tongue. As far as Manipal University concerned, CLIL centre will focus on the Kannada language.

Adding further Neeta Inamdar pointed that over 10% of international languages, which are vulnerable to extinction are spoken in India following which it is the prior responsibility of these centres to save the languages from extinction.

Higher learning institutes across the country must support initiatives to support mother tongue apart from giving more emphasis to English. Equal importance must be given to mother tongue and English to maintain sustainability.
