Sources informed that it will take 5 years to implement the expansion once the move is approved by the government. The HRD Ministry has asked the IIMs to increase their student intake. Currently, 1,100 students are enrolled at IIM-A.
Talking about the HRD Ministry’s proposal, a ministry official said that it is more constructive to increase the intake of the old IIMs as they are already a big brand than spending resources in the establishment of new ones. Also, newer of the 20 IIMs such as IIM Ranchi and IIM Amritsar are dependent on government aid. Many of these institutes also lack faculty and directors.
In the first phase, seats in the PGP course offered by IIM-A will be increased within a time span of 3 years. Seats in PGPEX and other courses will be increased in the next two years.
Six of the oldest IIM including – IIM Ahmedabad , IIM Lucknow , IIM Calcutta , IIM Kozhikode , IIM Indore and IIM Bangalore – have been included in the government’s plan of seat expansion. Responses regarding the government’s proposal have been sent by IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Kozhikode. The other institutes have not shared their opinion yet.
