The Government Medical College Manjeri has been given approval by the Medical Council of India for awarding an MBBS degree. MCI has sent a letter of recommendation to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare regarding the approval of the Medical College. The Government Medical College is expecting to receive an answer for the same from the Ministry soon. MCI has stated in their letter of approval that the Government Medical College will be given recognition for the next five years.
Due to lack of the required facilities and infrastructure, the college had been denied from receiving the approval from the Medical Council of India. After being denied the approval for the same, the administration of the college had started making the required changes to the college such as including hostel to the campus, and other facilities that will be required by the students during their stay at the college.
In March 2018, a team of members had been sent to the college to review the facilities and revert back with the feedback. To the disappointment of the team, the team had advised the Medical Council of India from giving the college the approval that they had been requesting for. Some of the facilities that were missing from the college were facilities in the casualty sector, shortage of hostel as well as nursing facilities, along with the shortage of facilities for the department of surgery.

However, the MCI had decided to grant the approval to the Government Medical College, on the terms that the college will be adding the required facilities and the infrastructure to the college. The MCI decided to do so only after some of the state authorities intervened and requested the MCI to change the decision.
