One of the 10 candidates to top the CAT 2019 exam, Patrick D'Souza is not your ordinary CAT aspirant. Hailed as a 'Serial CAT taker' by the Times of India, Patrick is a candidate that does not aim to get into an IIM but chooses to appear for CAT to improve his teaching skills.

Meet the Six-Time CAT Topper

Results of the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2019 were announced on 4th January 2020 and a total of 10 candidates topped the exam with a 100 percentile score. One of these 10 candidates to top the exam was Patrick D'Souza, a feat that he has achieved 4th time in a row this year.

Patrick's achievements in the CAT 2019 exam are hard to beat. Patrick has been attempting the national-level entrance exams for admission to management colleges in India since 2005 and this was his 15th attempt this year. He has managed to score the 100th percentile for 6 times and the rest of the times, he has received an almost-perfect 99+ percentile score.

However, the reason why Patrick attempts the CAT exam is not to gain admission into one of the Indian Institutes of Management or any other management college. Instead, he runs his own coaching institute and attempts the exam to stay updated with the latest trends and topics appearing in CAT.

Patrick's teaching methods focus on developing a logical understanding of the exam sections, type of questions and basing the attempt as well as the preparation on a student's own assessment of his/her strengths and weaknesses. He maintains that CAT preparation must go beyond books and any aspirant who wishes to do well in the exam must first develop an overall understanding of the exam and then work to improve their score and attempts. His teaching methods have been quite successful and a number of candidates passing out from his academy have scored the 99th percentile score in the CAT exam.

While Patrick's attempts at CAT may have been just to help him better his teaching skills and understanding of the CAT exam, it is certainly an inspiration for any CAT aspirant. It is quite an astonishing feat considering the level of difficulty and the immense pressure that a CAT aspirant has to face.
