MHRD Launches ‘Study in India’ Portal; Aims to Attract 2 Lakh International Students

MHRD Launches ‘Study in India’ Portal; Aims to Attract 2 Lakh International Students

The 'Study in India' programme was launched on April 18, 2018, by Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs. The Ministry of Human Resource Development had given its nod for ‘Study in India’ programme in March 2018. More than 160 higher education institutes in the country have been shortlisted for this initiative to attract international students.

An official portal associated with Study in India was launched at the India Habitat Centre. Cultural events, screening of Study in India film were a part of the launching ceremony. Ambassadors and representatives from over 30 countries attended the event. the aim of the programme is to attract over 2 lakh international students till 2023

The new initiative will attract more international students to choose Indian institutes for pursuing higher studies. ‘Study in India’ programme will also double India’s market share of global education exports from 1% to 2%. The initiative will improve the global ranking of Indian institutes. Indian students need not worry as the number of seats available for the native students will not be affected.

Highlights of ‘Study in India’ Programme: -

  • 'Study in India' programme will offer fee waiver and scholarship to meritorious students
  • The institute will be free to decide fee waiver and scholarship
  • As per the guidelines of MHRD, 100% tuition fee waiver will be provided to top 25% candidates
  • 50% fee waiver will be offered to the next 25% of students
  • The next 25% students in the list will be offered a fee waiver of 25%
  • The higher learning institutes are responsible to bear the expenditure on fee waiver based on cross-subsidization or through its existing funding
  • For the academic years 2018-19 and 2019-20, the central government has approved an expenditure of Rs. 150 crores for ‘Study in India’ programme
  • The expenditure of Rs. 150 crores will be primarily spent on brand promotion activities
  • As per the existing provisions, 10-15% supernumerary seats will be applicable for the international students in educational institutes

The government is hopeful that Indian institutes will feature in the list of top 100 institutes across the globe through the effective implementation of ‘Study in India’ programme.
