The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced revamped scholarships for the children of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to pursue undergraduate courses in Indian Universities. The MEA said that the scholarship programme for Diaspora children has been extended from 40 to 66 countries under this scheme which include 17 Emigration Check Required (ECR) countries.

The number of scholarships is increased from 100 to 150. The ministry will provide 50 scholarships for the Children of Indian Workers in ECR countries.
Under this scheme, the children of NRIs and PIOs will get scholarships to pursue undergraduate courses in any stream except medical and related courses. The scholarship will be provided to pay tuition fee, admission fee along with hostel facilities. However, students have to manage food charges. The scheme will commence from the current academic year i.e. 2016-2017.

The students can acquire scholarships for pursuing UG courses in central universities, colleges that are accredited with ‘A’ grade by NAAC, National Institutes of Technolgy (NIT), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPAs).
The eligible students can apply for scholarships in the online portal of SPDCINDIA . The last date for the submission of applications is September 23, 2016.
