The MAEER’s MIT Group of Institution, Pune is all set to open its first railway engineering college at Barshi, Solapur from the academic year 2017-18. This college will be one of its own kind in India and will begin operating between June-July.
Dr. Vishwanath Karad, founder-president of MAEER’s MIT revealed that the institute has received approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for the setting up of the college - that will be dedicated to studies concerning railways in the country.

He further informed that the degree course syllabus would include topics like Railway System Planning, Railway Operations, Railway Infrastructure, among others. Besides this, the college will also offer courses in Civil Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial & Production Engineering, and Computer Engineering.

Dr. Karad shared his vision to make MIT College of Railway Engineering a medium for qualified degree holders, postgraduates, Ph.D. holders and researchers who can contribute to strengthening the Indian Railways. He expressed that though Indian Railways is one of the largest rail networks, it still needs to work on ensuring introduction of high-velocity engines, modernization of railway technology and engineering, the safety of railway passengers and minimum delay in journeys.
Hence, it is expected that Railway Systems Engineering will have a huge scope of development for which highly qualified and skilled railway engineers will be required. He also added that except India, Railway Engineering is taken seriously worldwide. He cited the example of our neighbouring country China, which itself has more than eighty courses related to railway engineering. He very confidently claimed that the engineers who will pass out from this college will be exposed to many career and research opportunities in railway related fields.
