The two students, Saurabh Mhashelkar and Nimesh Savla, said that the college, flouting all rules and regulations of the university, charged fees from them which were more than double the fee prescribed by the university in the prospectus.

The University had conducted an enquiry into the matter and after that, it ruled in favour of the students and hence the college was asked to return the excess amount it had collected from the students within 15 days of receipt of the order.

Nimesh Savla said that the university prescribes an annual fee slab of INR 10,000 to INR 13,000 for the three-year as well as five-year LLB courses. But the college was charging them INR 36,000. The college had no authority to increase the fee. It is only the Vice-Chancellor who is entitled to make changes to the fee structure.

The college defending its stand said that it had increased the fee by 8 to 10 percent, which was necessary to manage expenses. The grievance cell turned down the college’s appeal.

Nimesh Savla said when they joined the college in 2011, the fees was tagged at INR 12,000 in the prospectus. But in the subsequent years, the fee was increased to INR 36,000. Due to rise in the fee, around five students in their batch left college midway as they could not bear the fees. Students were unaware of the rules. They wondered how can a college increase its fee without the order of the University. They approached High Court for justice.
