All seven candidates selected for the first batch of Ph.D. programme in design at National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad have opted for the five-year part-time programme. The institute will commence the session from the month of December.
Also, around 60 percent of the candidates interested in pursuing Ph.D., have applied for the part-time programme.
The Head of Ph.D. programme at NID, Prof. Vijai Singh Katiyar revealed that the students selected for the programme this week are working professionals and thus they have opted for the part-time format.

Katiyar revealed that the institute received 62 applications for the newly launched Ph.D. programme in NID. Among these, about 40 percent of the applicants were NID alumni. He added that seven candidates selected for the batch of 2017-18 are only required to get a permission from their employers for pursuing their Ph.D. programme side by side. He further informed about few mandatory classes to be attended in each semester.
The National Institute of Design will be offering Ph.D. in both part-time format of five years and full-time format of three years. However, Katiyar mentioned that no stipend will be given to the candidates opting for the full-time format, unlike other Ph.D. scholars.
The programme was previously slated to commence in the month of August, but now the date had been shifted to December.

The Parliament recently declared the institute as an “Institute of National Importance”, empowering the varsity to award its own degrees. The institute is looking forward to flag off researches in the fields of craft, cultures, innovation and entrepreneurship, interaction, social innovation (health, water and sanitation), public transportation design (like railways) among others.
