Dissatisfied with the agitations in Tamil Nadu against SC’s order on NEET, the Supreme Court of India has directed the state government of Tamil Nadu to maintain law and order. Passing the interim order, the apex court cautioned that if anyone is found to be involved in any kind of an activity that violates the law would be booked. A PIL was filed in SC by a lawyer GS Mani who claimed that the normal life of the people across the state was affected due to the ongoing protests against NEET.

Massive protests took place in Tamil Nadu last week which demanded the centre to scrap NEET for medical and dental admissions. In Coimbatore, students of a government college boycotted classes for almost three days to protest against CBSE-centric NEET. On the other hand, lawyers boycotted the district courts in Coimbatore last week and formed human chains demanding the centre and SC to roll back NEET. They further asked for inclusion of ‘Education’ under the state list. The DMK party announced that it would hold protests against NEET on September 13, 2017, wherein students, parents and volunteers will take part.

Tamil Nadu was not given exemption from the medical entrance exam - NEET by the Centre despite various efforts made by the state government. The State Assembly had passed Ordinances refraining itself from NEET. The Comptroller and Auditor General of India was not in the favour of granting NEET exemption to Tamil Nadu as it would result into other states coming up with similar requests.
