Supreme Court Rejects Plea to Cancel NEET UG 2024: The Supreme Court of India on January 2, 2024 rejected the petition of DMK’s campaign to remove the National Entrance cum Eligibility Test (NEET) examination and also asked the state to not entertain such activities in the school. In this petition by Tamil Nadu's ruling party, it was demanded that NEET UG be abolished for medical admissions in the state. Earlier in October, DMK had launched a campaign to get 50 lakh signatures in 50 days to abolish the national-level medical entrance examination.
Supreme Court Rejects DMK’s Petition to Abolish NEET UG 2024
The bench consisting of Justice Surya Kant and Justice K V Vishwanathan while hearing the plea stated that the entrance exams conducted across the country every year for medical, engineering and other courses are necessary and hence must continue to be held.
The petitioner claimed while making his claim that the entrance exam is distressful to the students yet they have to face the examination annually. Answering the plea, the bench said that today’s students are very well-informed and aware of what is happening around them. They know pretty well what is logical and what is propaganda. The apex court bench dismissed the plea for not having enough content and relatability to the current-day context.

In its judgement, the Supreme Court also directed the state to avoid such activities in schools and keep a check on them. This decision has given a major blow to DMK’s signature campaign against the NEET 2024 examination. Unaffected by this hearing, NTA will be conducting the NEET UG 2024 examination according to the timetable that will be released soon. Students who aspired to pursue MBBS/BDS courses in any of the medical colleges of the country will be able to fill out the registration forms tentatively from the first week of March 2024.
