J&K is getting 5 new medical colleges and the CM of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti gave an update on the colleges. On 11th August’ 16, she talked about the progress of medical institutes and how having new colleges will help the state strengthen the sector of medical education. She also said since each college will add 100 seats so in total extra 500 medical seats in the state will ensure an increase in the level of admission.

The ratio that has been finalised for funding is 90:10 i.e. 90 percent of the fund will be given by central government and 10 percent of the fund will be given by state government. For colleges Rs. 945 crore has been sanctioned, Rs. 189 crore for each college.
Following is the distribution of funds:
- Construction of college building- Rs 69 crore
- Construction of residential and hostel facilities- Rs 40 crore
- Upgradation of teaching method- Rs 30 crore
- Purchase of new tools and machinery- Rs 50 crore

The Union ministry has released over Rs 21 crore as the first instalment for the construction of the colleges. Following are the location for establishment of new colleges:
- Kathua
- Baramulla
- Anantnag
- Rajouri
- Doda
