The Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Harsh Vardhan has announced that the AIIMS Madurai campus will open and function as has been scheduled. The new AIIMS campus in Tamil Nadu is expected to be equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and research facilities.
Recently, in February 2020, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ministry, Dr Harsh Vardhan declared that the process of establishment for Madurai campus of AIIMS will commence its operations on schedule. He further added that the centre will be providing the necessary assistance and support to establish the campus with the state-of-the-art infrastructure and research facilities which will compete at the global level.
The central government announced setting up of AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in Tamil Nadu in Budget 2015-16. However, things had not been materialised at the time, and a PIL was filed in Madras HC seeking central government’s stand on setting up AIIMS in Tamil Nadu. The PIL had further sought the central government to initiate the process of setting up AIIMS.
Replying to the PIL, in December 2018, the central government informed Madras HC that AIIMS Tamil Nadu would start functioning in 45 months. The proposal to set up AIIMS in Tamil Nadu is yet to be approved by Union Cabinet, informed by Union Health Ministry.

The Union Health Ministry further indicated that the process of identifying the location by the Tamil Nadu government for AIIMS was delayed. In June 2018, the government of Tamil Nadu had proposed five locations for setting up AIIMS . After inspecting the locations, the central government had finalised Madurai as the site for establishing the AIIMS campus. Once the union cabinet approves the proposal, the government would initiate the process of setting up AIIMS, submitted by the Union Health Ministry.

With the recent development on the topic, it can be expected to witness a new AIIMS Madurai Campus within the next year or so, as per the promises of the Central Government. It can also be expected for AIIMS Tamil Nadu to start functioning from a temporary campus. More details are yet to be finalised.
