The Road Transport and Highways Ministry of the country has launched a new road safety course to impart traffic education in universities and colleges in an effort to decrease the number of road accidents by 2022.
The main aim of the programme is to decrease the number of road accidents. According to the reports, 70% of fatal road crashes in 2017 involved adults between in the age group of 18-45. Over 1.47 lakh people lost their lives in 4.7 lakh road accidents in 2017.
The programme, namely, Road To Safety Towards Responsible Youth is an initiative of Mansukh Lal Mandaviya, Minister of State for Road Transport and Highway in association with Diageo India and Institute of Road Traffic Education. While speaking at the event, Madaviya said that in the past few years there has been a sudden increase in the number of road crashes. Rash driving, not following traffic rules, not wearing seatbelts and helmets are some of the top factors responsible for high rate of road accidents.

Therefore, through this initiative ministry aims to reduce road accidents by 50% by 2022. Their vision is to promote road safety and make safer cities a reality.
He further informed that the association attempts to provide students with a formal and structured training programme for university students as they usually apply for the learner’s license in large numbers. The programme aims to reach more than 500 universities all over the country in the next 3 to years.
It will be a four-hour interactive programme led by the senior faculty members of IRTE. The programme will cover many aspects such as responsible driving, defensive driving, speeding and other related topics. It is a step towards creating awareness about responsible driving habits.

According to the industry reports, India accounts for 12.5% in the global road accidents which imply that one road accident happens in every 4 minutes. 72% victims involved in the road crashes are between the age group of 15-44 years due to factors such as speeding, drunk driving among others.
