NExT Exam: NMC issues draft guidelines, schedule, exam pattern, marking scheme

NMC has issued draft guidelines for the NExT exam, and it is expected to be implemented in December 2023. Here are the detailed guidelines regarding NExT Step 1 and Step 2.
NExT Exam

NExT Exam: National Medical Commission has released draft guidelines for the implementation of the National Exit Test which will serve as an exam that will grant license to MBBS graduates to practice medicine in India. On the other hand, NExT is going to replace the NEET PG entrance exam that is conducted for admission to PG medical courses. Through the draft guidelines, NMC has specified the details about exam pattern, marking scheme, exam schedule., duration and many more.

Purpose of the Exam
  • Grant license to practice modern medicine in India
  • Determine the eligibility for admission PG medical courses
Applicability
  • Final year MBBS students
  • Foreign medical graduates who wish to practice medicine in India
Exam Stages
  • NExT Step 1
  • NExT Step 2
Exam Time Line
  • Step 1 in December/ Second Half of 2023 or within 30 Days from the announcement of official schedule
  • Step 2 in March
What is NExT Step 1?
  • It is a theory based exam with multiple choice questions
  • The mode of exam is computer-based
  • The syllabus of the exam is based on III MBBS and Final year
  • There will be six papers in the exam
Qualifying marks in Step 1 50% in each paper
What is NExt Step 2? This is an objective based exam that includes practicals, viva voice, clinical skills etc
Qualifying marks in Step 2 The candidates will be declared either Pass/ Fail basis the performance
What if candidates fail NExT? A supplementary exam will be conducted in the same year, and the candidates can appear for it
As per the above guidelines, the NExT exam will replace NEET PG and FMGE entrance exams. It is going to serve as a single entrance exam for obtaining a medical license and PG medical admission. NExT is expected to be implemented in December 2023.
