National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar has been successful in recording over 80% placements every year. The 2016 unrest on campus and clashes between the students had no impact on NIT Srinagar’s admissions or placements.
Director of NIT Srinagar, Mr. Rakesh Sehgal clarified that there was no decline in the number of students joining NIT Srinagar. The campus life at the premier technical institute has never been affected even though there was unrest or disturbance in Kashmir. At NIT Srinagar, students focus more on academics and there is minimal time left for them to concentrate on other issues, he added.

Adding further, Mr. Rakesh Sehgal pointed that NIT Srinagar consists of 12 departments and over 550 students enrol in Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Ph.D. courses every year. The institute reserves 50% of seats to the students from Jammu & Kashmir. In all, 80% of students are being placed in reputed companies every year, which is a positive sign. Most of the companies prefer students who scored an aggregate of 6.50 to 7 GPA out of 10 points in all the semesters, he explained.
Explaining the development activities at NIT Srinagar, Mr. Rakesh Sehgal mentioned that the central government approved Rs. 100 crore under Prime Minister Development Programme for improving infrastructure, sports and hostel facilities. Under TEQIP , Rs. 15 crore would be spent for upgrading other facilities. The institute will also give appropriate exposure to teaching fraternity and students, he highlighted.

Mr. Rakesh Sehgal agreed that the hostel facilities at NIT Srinagar are not up to the mark. The hostel does not have sufficient accommodation. Now, the institute has taken up the process of upgrading hostel facilities to accommodate 4,028 students. The institute will also take steps to maintain the proper student-faculty ratio, he concluded.
