The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Uttarakhand will have its permanent campus constructed in the Pauri district at Sumari. An area of 200 acres of land has been approved by the State Government of Uttarakhand for the construction of NIT Uttarakhand at Sumari. The news was announced on 23rd July 2019, Tuesday, and the foundation stone is expected to be laid at the beginning of September.
Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the Union Human Resource Development Minister, gave assurance for the establishment of NIT Uttarakhand to Dhan Singh Rawat, the Higher Education Minister of Uttarakhand. An official release stated that Rawat had called Pokhriyal for a meeting in New Delhi on 22nd July 2019, Monday, and that is when the two discussed the construction of NIT Uttarakhand at Sumari.

The admissions at the institute for the new session will be conducted in Srinagar. The release stated that all the students of NIT Uttarakhand who had shifted to MNIT Jaipur last year due to the complaints regarding the lack of facilities and the absence of a permanent campus will be called back soon. Over a hundred students of NIT Uttarakhand had left the campus and gone back home in a collaborated movement after a prolonged agitation that was held in protest against the lack of facilities at the temporary campus of the institute in Srinagar.

There are a total of 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in India among which 20 come under old NITs and 11 are the new ones. NIT Delhi , NIT Andhra Pradesh , NIT Goa , and NIT Uttarakhand do not have permanent campuses of their own and the government and MHRD are proceeding towards approving lands for the construction of a permanent campus of these NITs soon.
