At a time while students' union are demanding for the restoration of direct elections to Students' Central Association (SCA), The Himachal Pradesh University on Friday decided not to hold direct elections to student bodies in the university and its 110 affiliated colleges as to prevent incidents of violence in the campuses.
The direct elections were not held last year due to violence which normally erupted in colleges and university.
The Vice-chancellor had recently convened a meeting of principals of government and private colleges, following which a consensus was reached against holding direct elections.
The university's executive council approved the constitution of a nominated students central association for which the entire process will be completed between August 24-31.
The executive council meeting was chaired by vice chancellor A.D.N. Bajpai.
The student bodies -- ABVP and SFI -- had joined hands last years and launched an agitation for the revival of direct elections, but the university authorities remained adamant.
SFI, ABVP and NSUI are demanding direct elections to SCAs of Himachal Pradesh University and 110-odd affiliated colleges.
While Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has already said the state government has decided not to hold elections to the student bodies as these were creating law and order problems.
The university last year decided to have a nominated student union comprising all-rounders and meritorious students.
