The Supreme Court of India has issued an interim stay on BCI's decision to impose the age restriction on law courses. As of now, there is no age limit for the candidates who wish to seek admission to five-year LLB course and three-year LLB course.
On March 1, 2017, the Bar Council of India had decided to reduce the upper age limit for seeking admission to five-year integrated LLB programme and three-year LLB course. BCI took this decision as the Supreme Court of India criticised the decision of BCI regarding imposing the age restriction. As per the decision of BCI, the upper age limit for five-year LLB course has to be increased from 20 to 22 years and three-year LLB course from 30 to 45 years.

On the other hand, BCI has taken all the interim measures to avoid confusion among the aspirants regarding the upper age limit. The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) for the year 2017 will take place on May 14, 2017. BCI has submitted its decision to Supreme Court but the apex court issued an interim stay on age restriction on March 3, 2017.

Earlier, the Supreme Court mentioned that there is no necessity to impose an age restriction on law courses and if BCI has any plans to increase the upper age limit, it could postpone it for the coming academic session. The court also directed BCI to take a positive decision. The Supreme Court took up the issue on February 28, 2017, and posted the next hearing on March 3, 2017.
Various other states, which conducted state-level entrance exam for law courses, will now be able to issue the notification for the entrance examination, post the Supreme Court's decision.
