Ratan Thiyam, former director of National School of Drama (NSD) and an eminent theatre personality said that National School of Drama is constantly working to bring back the tradition of performing arts. However, he adds that it is time when the authority needs to think about the institution as a central school of theatre studies and carry out more research and lab work. He also said that the motive of NSD should be to bring theatre close to people.
National School of Drama was established in 1959 and is an autonomous institute. Few of the famous alumni of National of Drama are Anupam Kher, Irfan Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, Neena Gupta, etc. As a part of the training at NSD, students have to produce plays and perform before the audience. The training at NSD includes a comprehensive curriculum which has every aspect of theatre and the theoretical aspect is closely tied to practice. NSD offers a three-year full-time diploma course for students who wish to make a career in this field.
