After 2013, Osmania University did not hold an annual convocation ceremony due to numerous issues. The convocation ceremony that took place in 2013 was also marked with protest. A Ph.D. scholar denied receiving degree demanding the central government to issue separate Telangana state. The Osmania University hosted its 80th convocation ceremony on 17th June 2019.
Governor ESL Narasimhan addressed the students during the convocation and asked the students to maintain discipline, diligence and determination as it plays an important role in one's life. Around 673 Ph.D degrees and 292 gold medals were awarded during the 80th convocation ceremony of Osmania University.

The governor and Osmania University Chancellor ESL Narasimhan, and Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Director S Chandrasekher were a part of the event. The ceremony took place at Tagore auditorium. Chandrasekhar an alumnus of OU, gave the convocation address, and awarded the degrees.
Total 2,896 scholars were eligible for the Ph.D. degrees and out of this, 1,800 have already taken their Ph.D. degrees in absentia. 300 candidates will get gold medals during the convocation. Considering the number of eligible candidates, the university has decided to confer Ph.D. degrees in person while the rest will be given in absentia.

The university has also invited online applications for awarding degrees to successful candidates in the exams from July 2012-June 2018. The Ph.D. degrees awarded up to June 11, 2019, will also be taken into consideration.
Candidates who are eligible can register through OU's official website and pay the fee online from May 16 onwards. The last date to submit the online applications is June 11 for Ph.D. candidates, and for UG/PG/Dip/M. Phil programmes, the last date is May 31, 2019. Those who have already taken their degree certificates, in absentia will not be eligible to apply and if they do, then the fee they have paid will not be refunded. Gold medals will be awarded to students at their respective colleges after the end of the convocation ceremony.
In January 2018, Osmania University backed out from hosting 105 th Indian Science Congress due to security issues and disturbance prevailing on the campus.
