Panjab University has developed a WHO-recommended hand sanitiser which has a solution of isopropyl alcohol/ethanol with hydrogen peroxide, glycerol and deionised water.
The Department of Chemistry, Panjab University has come up with a laboratory-made hand sanitiser as per the World Health Organisation standards and it can be used for protection against bacterial and viral strains.
The team of research scholars who have helped develop the sanitiser is led by Dr Rohit Kumar Sharma under the able leadership of Professor KN Singh, Panjab University chairman. The sanitiser which has been developed comprises a solution of isopropyl alcohol/ethanol with hydrogen peroxide, glycerol and deionised water as per the recommendations of WHO. The idea behind developing this sanitiser free of cost is to hand it over to the university employees such as the gatekeepers and other employees who are involved in public dealing. IIT Hyderabad had also created a sanitiser to fight coronavirus recently.

VC of the university, Prof Raj Kumar has mentioned that the sanitiser should be made in bulk and given to as many people as possible on a no-profit and no loss basis. He said that the university should play a vital role in educating the society amid coronavirus threat. Dr Rohit Sharma also stated that the cost of raw material for manufacturing the sanitisers has gone up off late due to the increase in demand and less supply.

This has led to an increase in the cost of preparing such sanitisers. Dr Sharma said that these sanitisers can be offered to the general public by the university if the city administration helps in ensuring the supply of a sufficient amount of raw materials in the coming days.
