Panjab University has managed to secure a spot in the top 2% universities globally as per CWUR (Centre for World Universities Ranking). The varsity secured the fourth rank at the all-India level and 554 among the top 1,000 universities across the globe. Interestingly, the University of Delhi bagged the top spot at the all-India level and ranked 397 globally. Indian Institute of Technology (Delhi) and Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore) also performed exceptionally well in the rankings.

Director of Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Professor Rajiv Lochan expressed his happiness regarding the performance of Panjab University in CWUR Rankings. He indicated that Panjab University is one of the top universities in the country, which manages to bag good ranks irrespective of the parameters which are considered. Delhi University, IIT Delhi and IISc Bangalore have their unique strengths and get different scores as per different parameters and criteria. Panjab University has been ranked based on different parameters including quality education, quality of faculty, alumni employment and so on.

The 'inter-state corporate body’ status of Panjab University turned out to be an obstruction for the varsity to seek ‘Institute of Eminence Status’ following which it is as of now, ineligible to be among the renowned world class institutes in India.
Only government or privately owned universities are eligible to register for ‘Institute of Eminence Status’. Panjab University is the only varsity in India that enjoys the above-mentioned unique status. The varsity is controlled neither by state government nor by the central government. The officials of PU were unhappy with the UGC notification for the universities seeking ‘Institute of Eminence Status’.
