PG Aspirants of Gauhati University Demand Refund of Entrance Exam Fee

A section of PG aspirants along with Students’ Federation of India or SFI demanded Gauhati University to refund the entrance exam fee and other expenses incurred by the applicants. The varsity had postponed PG entrance exams that were scheduled to begin on July 20, 2017. Due to a petition filed by a few PG aspirants in Gauhati HC against the new selection procedure adopted by the varsity, HC ordered a stay on the PG entrance exams. However, the court allowed the varsity to carry out the admission process as per the existing procedure, i.e., merit-based admissions.

Usually, the varsity conducts PG admissions based on the percentage of marks secured by the candidates in UG. According to the official schedule of Gauhati University, the admission process is scheduled to begin on July 28 and July 29, 2017. Academic session for the first year PG students was to begin from August 1, 2017. Now, the admission process might be delayed.

Around 20,000 students applied for the PG entrance examination. SFI criticised the varsity for not taking adequate measures when the court gave a ruling on a complaint filed by only four students. SFI further demanded the varsity to refund the candidates as well as compensate them. Many students had not applied to any other varsity hoping of securing a seat in Gauhati University.

Petitioners claimed that the varsity failed to amend the previous ordinance in which it was stated that the admission process for PG courses would be based on UG percentage or marks secured by the candidates. Therefore, GU’s decision to hold the entrance exam violated the existing ordinance.
