Higher education is becoming a popular choice in India as per the data released by Human Resources Minister, Mahendra Nath Pandey in Lok Sabha on 8th August’ 16. The minister based his report on the data he collected from UGC which is University Grants Commission. The number of students enrolling for Doctorate has increased by almost 20,000 in the last 10 years. The number of applications was 10,497 in the year 2006 while in 2016 the number has gone up to 27,001. The number is increasing despite the announcement of new rules for PhD and M.Phil.

The minister also mentioned that in the last to last academic year i.e 2014-15 the number of PhD degrees awarded to students was 27,327. The increment in number is linked to the increment in tie-ups of internationally renowned companies or organisations with institutes.

Recently UGC announced the new rules for PhD which included the rule that from this academic year there will be a decrease in the number of seats. The decrease in the number of seats will lead to higher competition and possibly quality education.
