As the number of doctoral degrees is on the rise in eminent institutes such as IITs or the Indian Institute of Technology, more and more recruiters are coming to IITs for placements for the Ph.D. batches. Even though there were plenty of inherent challenges, many Ph.D. scholars from the institutes are getting placed with many universities, research and development sectors and also software and core engineering sectors in different organisations.
The most prominent companies that have shown interest and hired Ph.D. scholars from IITs, include Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Sandeep University, SRM University , Taiwan Semiconductor, and Mathworks.
The institutes expressed their grief that many companies missed the placements and also, no rush was seen as it common at the time of bachelors placements from the institutes. The prime reason behind this scenario is that many companies do not have specialised fields to incorporate new professionals who have done Ph.D. in chosen specialisations.
There is a common trait among the Ph.D. scholars of the institutes to look for jobs in off-campus. Many of them choose to go abroad for post-doctoral courses so that they can get appointed as a faculty in the top-rated institutes and universities in India as they return.
Regardless of these issues, the happy news it the Ph.D. placements are on a rise. In the IIT Kharagpur , this year (2018-19) the campus placements from Ph.D. students were 22 in number, the number is definitely higher by 10 marks comparing to the 12 placements done from the Ph.D. course last year (2017-18).
The Chairman of the Career Development Centre, Mr. Raja Sekhar informed that 2 students of the current year are placed in Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) many other were placed in Corporates, unlike the last year where only recruitment came from the universities for teaching faculty roles. The average salary of Ph.D. students generally ranges around 9.23 lacs per annum.
Manu Santhanam who is the advisor of training & placement at IIT Madras said that hardly 20% of the students of Ph.D. curses opt for campus placements. He added that most of the Ph.D. students want to work with leading IITs and NITs but as the competition has increased over the course of past few years, 50 to 60 percent of the students are now ending up abroad seeking post-doctoral courses in international universities. Europe and the US have higher scopes for them and the corporate sector in India is not creating many challenging roles for Ph.D. graduates.
An IIT Bombay placement cell executive has informed that the core engineering companies, IT sector, and universities are hiring from the institute. He informed that similarly in the IIT Bombay, most people do not depend on campus placements but seek jobs on their own and many people have plans for higher studies.

The deputy director of HRD, Jerry Joseph has said that they have plans to increase appointments of exceptional talents from the most premier institutes in India and abroad. Majorly because of the quality they are able to bring in to the system with respect to research and academic output.
The Ph.D. placements from newer IITs also seeing a surge. The IIT Hyderabad has seen 44 Ph.D. students registering for placement in the academic year of 2018-19.
