The placement season for the academic session 2017-18 will start soon in Maharashtra, and there is no sign of curiosity and anxiety among the students. Instead, the students are nervous about the salary packages. Simply, the fear of lesser pay has gripped students of Mumbai University facing placements for 2017. According to sources, there is an assumption that a few companies in popular sectors or domains may lower the annual packages offered. A few companies are expected to give campus placements a miss as well.

A final year marketing student of NMIMS University’s School of Management pointed that economic slowdown is one of the reasons due to which the companies might offer lesser pay. In 2016, IT sector was the largest recruiter, and the average pay offered was Rs. 18 lakh per annum. However, a trend of layoffs is currently prevalent in the IT industry, and the students are in constant fear that the employment opportunities in IT sector will be less compared to the previous years.

A placements coordinator at a reputed institute in Mumbai indicated that there is anxiety among the students regarding placements. Even though there is expected to be a minimal slump in 2017, the recently concluded summer placements instilled new hopes on the upcoming placements seasons.
Apart from IT sector, engineering students are expecting fewer offers from the strategy and manufacturing sectors. For MBA students, the number of offers in IT sector might be lesser this time .
A placements official at Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay) mentioned that IT sector has evolved from coders to expertise in fields like Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence. The companies that usually come for campus placements will continue their visit. However, there is no clarity on the number of new companies registers for campus placements.
