Delhi HC has asked the BCI to take a decision on the inclusion of vernacular languages in CLAT within three weeks, before June 30, 2020 and convey it to the petitioner students. The petition also raised the point that other competitive exams do include vernacular languages.
The Delhi HC has directed the Bar Council of India to treat the plea seeking conduct of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2020 and in future in all vernacular languages as a representation. The court, on June 20, asked the BCI to decide whether the admission test will be held in vernacular languages or not.
Two students named Pratham Kaushik and Neeta Rai filed the writ petition saying that the Consortium of NLUs (conducting body of CLAT 2020) has no reason to specify an exclusive language for the entrance exam. The petition raised the point that other exams such as NEET and IIT JEE do include vernacular languages.
Delhi HC has asked BCI to take a decision on the same within three weeks or before June 30, 2020 and convey it to the petitioner students as the last date to apply for the exam is July 10, 2020.

The counsel for the petitioners, Gauraan Bhardwaj, further added that the exclusive use of English in the test has lead to the admission of students majorly from English medium schools. The district courts in India also function in vernacular languages and Indian laws and acts are passed not merely in the English language. Hence, it is imperative to allow the test to be conducted in local languages as well, stated the petitioners to the court.

They also argued that giving primacy to English over Tamil, Bengali, Oriya, Telegu, etc. was unfair, unjust and improper as Article 343 of the Indian Constitution clearly says that the national language of India is Hindi.
