A week after leaving the post as the HRD Minister, Smriti Irani has also lost control over selecting the next CBSE chief. According to sources, Smriti Irani recommended Dr Sarvendra Vikram Bahadur Singh for the post of CBSE chairman , which soon was rejected by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The deciding authority, Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Narendra Modi has taken the process of selecting the CBSE chief off the hands of the ministry.
In a letter from Department of Personnel & Training, it was mentioned that the ACC will now be selecting CBSE’s chairman and the earlier used selecting policy has been suspended.
But this is not the first time, Smriti Irani’s decisions have been questioned. Last year, ACC rejected her recommendation, Satbir Bedi on the grounds that she did not fulfill the basic qualification of having been education administrator for three years.
Since 2014, CBSE has been lacking a regular full-time chairman. Currently, HRD Joint Secretary YSK Seshu Kumar is at the post.
