Higher Education Minister of Tamil Nadu, R. Kamalakannan said that Pondicherry Engineering College would be upgraded into a technical university in the next couple of years. He inaugurated a two-day international conference on ‘Advances in Computational Intelligence in Communication’ on October 19, 2016. He mentioned that the upgradation of the college would take place under the scheme of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA).

He further added that the centre would provide funds for the development of various amenities and infrastructure once the college is upgraded into a university.
He advised the institute to work with consistency to improve rankings at all India level. Currently, the institute is ranked 49 th among the top institutes in India.

Various delegates and research scholars attended the conference and presented their ideas and opinions on the theme.
