Speaking at the 8 th Convocation of the Lovely Professional University (LPU), President of India, Pranab Mukherjee said that it should be the priority of educationalists to improve the quality of basic as well as applied research. The convocation was conducted on May 2, 2017. The President had also graced the 3rd convocation ceremony of LPU in 2013.
The President also added that good placements are not enough for an institute to achieve good international rankings. He also emphasised the need for nurturing intellectual capital in order to achieve a good status amongst the leading education institutions across the world.
Praising LPU for attracting students from over 50 countries, the President added that it is time to make India a higher education leader. He cited the example of ancient universities like Taxila and Nalanda and added that India should become the centre of learning by inviting students and faculty from all across the globe.
The President also emphasised the need to stop brain drain and said that in a country of 1.3 billion people, 38,000-degree colleges and 757 Universities are not enough. He further added that higher education should be more readily accessible to students.

The President also said that increasing the number of educational institutions is not enough. Increasing numbers and improving quality should move hand in hand, he said. He added that research and innovative ideas must be encouraged as they are the way of ensuring great diversity in India.
Gold medals were awarded to 38 students of the university by the President. Also, 164 students and Ph.D. holders were awarded for their exceptional performance and research initiatives. Prior to this, the President had also inaugurated ‘Unipolis’ at the campus of LPU – the largest convention center in India.

Ashok Kumar Mittal, Chancellor of LPU also awarded the honorary doctorate to President Pranab Mukherjee. Punjab Governor V P Singh Badnore, also attended the ceremony and urged the students to have a purpose in life.
Other guests who were present at the occasion included Shri Vijay Sampla, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment; Rana Gurjit Singh, Punjab’s Cabinet Minister for Irrigation and Power; LPU Chairman, Mr Ramesh Mittal; LPU Vice-Chairman, Mr Naresh Mittal; Mrs Rashmi Mittal, Pro Chancellor LPU and Prof Dr Ramesh Kanwar, Vice Chancellor of LPU. Other prominent industrialists, ambassadors, CEOs and leaders of the country also attended the ceremony.
