The Department of Economics Panjab University (PU), is upbeat about the possibility that one of its renowned alumnus, Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, may return to the department either as a visiting teacher or at least for a few interaction sessions with students.

A parliamentary panel has clarified that Dr. Manmohan Singh, right now an MP from Assam will not lose his Rajya Sabha membership even if he heads the Jawaharlal Nehru Chair at his alma mater. Chairperson of the Department of Economics, Prof Upinder Sawhney says that they are awaiting a communication from the office of the former PM about his visit. He had initially expressed interest in a seminar format and later in an interactive session with students. It is up to him whichever way he wants it. The complete program will be fixed after the date is finalized from his office.

Dr. Singh was a student in the Department of Economics at PU. He is likely to be provided an office in the VC’s office building when he comes. The university is equipped enough to carry out a video conferencing session to be used if Dr. Singh prefers it. It is up to Dr. Singh to decide on it depending upon his schedule and duration of his stay in the campus.
Undergraduate students are thrilled at the possibility that Dr. Singh may visit the campus. Apart from Dr. Singh, the economics department of the Unversity has had several academics who have made their mark as economists and educationists. They are -
