Captain Amarinder Singh, the chief minister of Punjab on Wednesday, 26th April 2017 had ordered a crackdown on the private medical and dental colleges which are playing with the future of students with an objective to make money. He threatened them to either perform or close business.
These orders were issued at a meeting of the departments of the medical education and health. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the various issues faced by the medical institutions in Punjab, including the controversies in Chintpurni Medical College in Pathankot and Gian Sagar Medical College in Banur. The private medical and dental colleges in the state would be shut down as per the warning received by Mr. Amarinder if found violating any admission norms or not providing quality education.

Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences, Jalandhar's problem was also taken up in the meeting. The CM had proposed to hand over this case to a well reputed medical group like Medanta Medicity after following a proper process so as to utilise its potential in the most favourable way.
The CM took few more steps to improve the functionality of the private medical colleges. He asked the vice-chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences to hold consultations with the medical education department to improve the performance of medical colleges and prepare the blueprint accordingly. He also demanded to explore ways to enhance the facilities in the state with the help of renowned surgeon Dr. Naresh Trehan who is the owner of Medanta Medicity, Gurugram.

The CM had asked chief secretary Karan Avtar Singh to make sure the central funds reserved for medical education are utilised by these colleges for enhancing the education quality and for upgrading the infrastructure since they have got complaints of lack of funds by many govt. medical colleges. He has also asked the chief secretary to look into the complaint received.
The health minister, Brahm Mohindra and chief secretary Karan Avtar Singh were among the important personality present at the meeting.
