Punjab Technical University (PTU) has decided to shut down four out of nine Punjab Institutes of Technology (PITs) due to ‘non-viability’. As per the official information of Registrar of PTU, the varsity has decided to close four PITs located in Amritsar, SAS Nagar and Dinanagar (two institutes). The varsity has discontinued the admissions in these four institutes for the academic session 2017-18.

This year, the admission process will take place in the following five PITs located in: -
- Sultanpur Lodhi
- Moga
- Hoshiarpur
- Rajpura
- Batala
Giving reasons for closing down four PITs, officiating Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Technical University revealed that most of the students are not showing interest to join B.Tech course in these institutes. The varsity will not permanently close these four PITs, but transform them as Skill Development centres. The staff of these institutes will render their services in skill development centres.
According to sources, most of the students are not opting to join in PITs, as they failed to meet the purpose. Therefore, the authorities have decided to transform these institutes into skill development centres.

Former Chief Minister of Punjab, Mr. Prakash Singh Badal was the person behind the initiative of establishing Punjab Institutes of Technology. These institutes were established to provide IIT standard of education to the rural students. However, these institutes failed to promote IIT standard education. Initially, the government also proposed to recruit faculty of IIT standard.
Instead of developing the institutes by promoting high-quality education, the varsity decided to shut down the institutes.
