Punjab University to Begin Courses on Terrorism

Chandigarh based Department of Defence and National Security Studies of Punjab University is going offer one-year post-graduate diploma course in Homeland Security.

The university senate had agreed on the decision to counter rapid terrorism. The university also avails the services of both retired and serving officials of defence and various intelligence wings of the country.

The course will teach students with both technical and theoretical knowledge of countering every kind of terrorist attack and natural calamity. The curriculum drafted after consulting senior defence officials. There are around 25 seats in the course and the students will get admission through an entrance test conducted by the varsity. Punjab University is the first university in India to give education on improving the internal security system of the country. Many universities in the US and in Europe are already conducting the course to combat and focus on terrorism.

Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) has also officially agreed to release 25 per cent of the central government's grants for Punjab University (PU). Punjab University will be receiving Rs 50 crore from the central government soon. The decision was taken on the request of the university to release funds as it was getting impossible for the university to pay its dearness allowances.
