QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) has announced the list of best universities among BRICS nations, and Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay has bagged 8 th rank. Over 300 universities from India, Brazil, South Africa, Russia and China have been observed and graded this year.

In BRICS QS Rankings 2016, Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore was the only institute that was listed amongst the top 10 institutes amongst the BRICS nations. Performance of Indian universities and institutions in 2017 list has improved considerably. IIT Kharagpur and IIT Guwahati also found a spot in the rankings.

Chairperson of UGC, Mr. Ved Singh Chauhan revealed that the rankings are satisfactory. Through these rankings, it is quite clear that Indian universities and institutes are delivering quality education and quality work.
Chinese universities topped the list of best universities in QS Rankings 2019. India had the second highest representation in the 2019 list after China. Universities have been ranked on the basis of the following eight performance indicators:
- Academic reputation
- Proportion of staff with a PhD
- Employer reputation
- Faculty/student ratio
- Proportion of international faculty and students
- Research publications and citation rates
